Hello,

Excellent job on your research regarding physician assisted suicide. When you did your research did you come up with any cases that occurred in the last few years? For instance, I discussed the Brittany Maynard story with Paolo above. The Brittany Maynard case is a very interesting case especially since she was so young. Many have felt that someone so young would not take the fact that they were going to die so calmly. However, I am sure that she had her good and bad days. As a matter of fact, I was able to discuss the issues with her husband when I was writing an ethics textbook for another university. He was adamant about the fact that she was very strong; however, they both were hurting that they were not going to have a long marriage. The one thing that he discussed with me was the fact that they were happy to have the choice and to have the autonomy to make the decision. As Paolo stated above, this could be due to the fact that they were younger and were more into autonomy. Do you have any thoughts on that?

In addition, to the Brittany Maynard case, there was a case in New Jersey where a World Series Poker Play was diagnosed with sarcoma, which is a rare form of cancer. While only in his 30s, he felt he wanted to decision to die with dignity; however, he knew he would not live to see assisted dying legalized in the State of New Jersey in August of 2019. Therefore, like Brittany’s case, he moved to California to have the choice to die with dignity. How would you handle this type of situation with either a loved one or a patient if they told you they were moving to another state in order to have to opportunity for assisted dying? Do you think that this should be allowed in all states? Should the Federal Government take a stand on this?

In healthcare, ethics continue to be an issue. Because of an increase in the awareness of ethical issues, ethics are being included in every healthcare educational program (Kavaler & Alexander, 2014). Ethics are important for healthcare organizations because it can help to guide them in making the proper decisions concerning what is right or wrong. Furthermore, there are four principles of healthcare ethics, which are autonomy, beneficence, justice, and non-maleficence. These four principles are there to help healthcare organizations to do what is best for the patient and to always put the interest of the patient first.

One of the chosen following scenarios is “should physician-assisted suicide be allowed in some situations?” In response to this scenario, I believe that physician-assisted suicide should be allowed in some situations. One of the reasons is due to the principle of autonomy, which can be brought into this scenario. When speaking of the principle of autonomy, it means allowing patients the right to make their own decisions on whether they should end their life or continue to live their life. Autonomy also means “respect for individual rights, as long as the exercise of those rights does not infringe on the rights of others or endanger or harm others” (Kavaler & Alexander, 2014, p. 141). If patients are not given the right or the choice to end their life, they might try to end their life on their own, which would then be considered as suicide. Furthermore, another reason is because physician-assisted suicide can help to relieve the suffering of patients with terminal illnesses. The pain that patients with terminal illnesses feel can be too much for them to handle. If physician-assisted suicide is not allowed and if a physician try to prolong the death of the patient, this will only allow the patient to live and continue to suffer a little longer. This will only make the patient feel more guilty for burdening their loved ones and causing them to feel distressed. Not only that, but the family of the patient also does not want to see their loved one continue to suffer due to a terminal illness. Therefore, I believe that physician-assisted suicide should be allowed in some situations because I feel that there are more benefits that outweigh all the disadvantages.
