American Public University System Social Identity and Stereotype Threat Discussion

Use this discussion board forum to react to what you have heard in the Hidden Brain interview featuring Claude Steele (which can be found here ) and use this forum to react what you have read in the young adult novel by Kimberly Jones and Gilly Segal that you were required to read (I’m Not Dying with You Tonight). You will also need to use this forum to react to what you saw and heard in the B-CU panel discussion that features the writers Kimberly Jones and Gilly Segal.

Each student should post a comment for each of the four numbered topics below. After you have written a comment for each of the numbered topics, you will then write a reply to a post that one of your peers has made about one of the four numbered topics. Every response or reply you make should be an effectively written paragraph that is at least four sentences, so every paragraph you write should include a clear topic sentence and other sentences that provide supporting details.

Once a student has completed this discussion board assignment, he or she will have written a total of five paragraphs. Four of the five paragraphs will be in one post in which there are comments for each of the four numbered topics and one paragraph will be a reply to another student’s work.

Feel free to like your peers’ comments. The student who gets the most likes will get an extra three points added to his or her final grade on Essay Three.

1. Consider the ideas about stereotype threat that are expressed by Claude Steele in the Hidden Brain interview. Then discuss in detail how those ideas can be connected to the actions or thoughts of the characters Lena and Campbell, who are the major protagonists in the novel I’m Not Dying with You Tonight. Your response to topic 1 should reflect that you have listened to the interview and read the Jones and Segal novel adequately.

2. The novel I’m Not Dying with You Tonight was published in 2019. It was inspired by the police brutality protests that took place in Baltimore in 2015, in the wake of the death of Freddie Gray, who died while in custody of Baltimore City police. Therefore, this novel coincides with the era of the Black Lives Matter movement. Considering this, tell us whether you think the novel’s depiction of the interaction between the novel’s two main characters — a teenage white girl and a teenage black girl — is realistic.

3. After you have watched the Zoom-style B-CU panel discussion featuring the authors Kimberly Jones and Gilly Segal, tell us what struck you most about what was said during the discussion.
